In America, size matters. The bigger you are, the more power you have, especially in the business world. Director Anat Baron takes you on a no holds barred exploration of the U.S. beer industry that ultimately reveals the truth behind the label of your favorite beer.
So much to be grateful for. Especially the supporters who believed in the film from the start (before they even saw it) and stood by it despite the naysayers. A big thanks to (in no particular order):

Dogfish Head — especially Sam and Mariah Calagione.

Stone Brewing — especially Greg Koch who is the epitome of walking the talk.

Brewers Association — especially Charlie Papazian for believing in the big picture.

Beer Advocate — especially Todd Alstrom who not only promoted the film but invited me to be a part of the American Craft Beer Festival.

Yelp — for taking a chance on this indie movie and engaging the Yelp community through its super enthusiastic community managers.

Reason Foundation/Reason TV –- especially Jon Graff for all the exposure.

Maureen Ogle -– for her support and smarts.

Jay Brooks — for telling it like it is.

Shaun O’Sullivan and Brock Wagner –- for helping to promote the film despite the fact that their brewery isn’t in it. They embody the collaborative spirit of craft brewers. I wish more would follow suit.

On a personal note, thank you to my number one supporter and social media guru, my sister — Ayelet Baron.

And a heartfelt thank you to all the bloggers, journalists, Facebook fans and Twitter followers who helped promote the film. I couldn’t have done it without you.

The journey continues. I’m glad to have you on my side.

Happy Turkey Day!

Social media means no more secrets. I was surprised to see a screening of my film advertised and retweeted over the past few days. It was happening at a bar in San Diego. One problem. I knew nothing about it. No one contacted me. Or asked for permission.

You know that (annoying) FBI warning you get whenever you put in a DVD. The one that says that the DVD is "for home use only?" Well, it’s there for a reason. You see, even in this age of free content, intellectual property has value. Especially when you’re dealing with an independent filmmaker.

I made a movie. I invested my time (3 years) and money, took out loans to make a film about a topic I believed in. And I wanted it to look good, sound great and have entertainment value. So I paid professionals to get it right. I hired a top level cinematographer, editor, composer, graphics designer, animators and others. I hope the quality is reflected in the film. But I did all of this believing that at some point, I would make my money back because people would put value to what I created. And pay for it.

So while I would love to just give away my movie, please understand that it’s not possible. I don’t have a big distributor or studio behind me. So if you want to screen the film at your bar, homebrew club or to your class, please get in touch with me. I always try to work things out. After all, it’s a catch 22. While I need to make my money back, I also want to expose the film to as many people as possible. And please, don’t force me to become "The Enforcer." It takes the fun away from being "The Filmmaker."

On Friday I met with yet another craft beer enthusiast who wants his own craft beer show on TV. Since I starting making the film, I’ve been approached by at least a dozen folks who want to do the same. What surprises me isn’t that everyone has the same idea (a TV show about travels to breweries and bars in search of great beers) or that no one has any TV experience but that there is no forethought about why a TV network would be interested.

Having spent some time in Hollywood, rest assured that unlike film, TV is a business. So if you want to create and get a show on the air, you need to prove that there’s an audience for it. Craft beer, while showing impressive growth is still tiny in numbers. Stats vary widely but I’ve seen estimates that there are between 6-8 million craft beer drinkers in America and an additional 750,000 homebrewers. Somewhat impressive numbers but how do you convince a TV network that a large percentage of them will actually tune in? You need viewers to get advertisers. And if the topic is craft beer, it’s doubtful that BudMillerCoors will want to be sponsors.

So what’s the solution? Will there be a craft beer show on TV? When? I say yes. But the when depends on you. I know of what I speak. I made an independent film, invested my own money (and took out loans to finish it) and have not been fully supported by this craft beer community. Why? Well, there’s a certain amount of “it’s not about me” and some disagreement over content. There’s also the feeling that the film should be free. (Again, I self funded it and spent 3 years to make it, why would I just give it away?) But unless this community begins to support filmmakers, beer publications (and therefore beer writers), there won’t be too many professionals following in our footsteps.

If you want to create or watch TV show about craft beer then help support existing entities so that the numbers can start adding up.

And yes, people are watching to see how Beer Wars “performs.” It is an indicator. Just like sales of beer publications. It’s not just about beer sales but it’s also about the media that covers them. The TV networks want to know that if they buy it, they will come.

So please, buy a copy of the Beer Wars DVD (and ask everyone you know to do the same). Subscribe to publications like All About Beer and/or BeerAdvocate and continue to support your local, independent brewery. Put your money where your mouth is.

Thank you!

I just read this comment about the trailer on YouTube : “This is such propaganda! Why is Jim Koch talking about his products when everyone knows that most of the Sam Adams line is contract brewed by Miller. In addition, he is one of the largest brewers in the country. I personally like a lot of different styles of beer, and I think it is up to the consumer as to what they drink. You can’t sit here and tell me that every micro brew out there would not like to sell more of their product! The elitist attitudes will destroy the craft beer movement.”

Wow. This guy is certainly passionate. And some of his comments were echoed by people I met at screenings and panels over the past few weeks.

One thing is certain. There is no singular craft beer enthusiast. And perceptions vary widely.

There are many who believe that craft beer should stay small and local. Some believe that craft beer should not be made by corporations. But on one of the panels, all 5 brewers admitted that their breweries/brewpubs were all… corporations. Seems like those people feel less connected once “their” discovery brand gets “too big” and move on to the next small brand. But that’s a contradiction. All breweries are businesses (that’s why some homebrewers see going “pro” as the next step) and therefore want to get bigger. Bigger means making more beer to satisfy consumer demand. And just because they get bigger doesn’t mean they’re sacrificing quality or their soul. I think Sam Calagione addresses this issue eloquently in the film when he contemplates expansion. And by the way, Boston Beer (maker of Sam Adams) is less than 1% of the US beer market so size is relative.

I believe that consumers should drink what they like. Period. Regardless of the size of the brewery. It’s all about personal choice. I have nothing against BudMillerCoors. Even craft brewers admit that there’s nothing better on a really hot summer day. I think that choice is personal. Buy products from companies whose quality appeals to you. And if you care, whose ethics match yours.

More from the panels/audience Q&A to come.

I’m on a plane to New York to promote the event (which is only 4 days away) on television. I’ve waited a long time for this moment and I’m trying to take it all in.

This adventure began in September 2005 and will culminate on April 16th, 2009. It’s been a long journey on so many levels. Personally, I’m celebrating completing and releasing a feature length independent film. Not a small feat in today’s crowded market. Professionally, I’m hoping that audiences show up to see it. As a filmmaker, that’s the holy grail. We make films because we have something to say, a story that must be told. And after the filming and editing and endless rough cut screenings, we want to share it with the world.

I know, be careful what you wish for. In our 2.0 world, everyone’s a critic. The naysayers are already out in full force. And they haven’t even seen the film!

So what are they taking issue with? Here’s a sampling:

How come the film doesn’t cover my local/favorite brewery?

Why should we care since the David and Goliath angle is dated?

Why is it only one night?

Why isn’t it playing at my local art house theater? Why can’t I drink beer and watch?

Why is it $15?

Why Ben Stein?

The only way I know to address criticism is head on. I have nothing to hide so here goes:

The film is less than 90 minutes long so there’s no way to show all 1400+ breweries or even the top 25. That’s not a feature film but a TV miniseries. Feature films need anchors in people whose stories will resonate because you care what happens to them on their journey. So while your favorite brewery may not be featured, the overall story is universal.

This is a documentary and not news. It takes time to film, edit and craft a story from 180 hours of footage. And I think that anyone who thinks that the overall battle is irrelevant today, needs to rethink that opinion. If anything, small brewers should be more concerned about consolidation and the big getting bigger.

It’s only one night because it’s an EVENT. It’s LIVE via satellite. A shared experience nationwide (except for the Pacific time zone where we hold it back so people can get to the theater, although it will run as is, unedited).

Art houses do not have the ability to receive the satellite feed. I’m not shutting them out but my deal is with a company that has 440 theatres that are digitally equipped to carry the event. No malice intended for the indie theaters. I’m a huge supporter. It’s just circumstantial. As to drinking beer. Trust me, you’ll be thirsty for one AFTER you watch the film. And your local bar or brewpub will be happy to serve you.

It’s $15 because it’s an event and not just a film. We are showing the live panel immediately following the world premiere of the movie. And the panelists assure me that they’ll put on a good show.

Ben Stein was hired to moderate the panel. That’s all. My partner required a celebrity host as part of the deal. We had a list and stopped once someone was available. Everyone on the list had pluses and minuses. Please be assured that this is MY movie, not Ben’s. And that this is not a forum for him to discuss any of his beliefs but rather to act as an impartial moderator to the cast of characters that make up the panel. If his involvement is what’s stopping you from attending then I hope you’ll reconsider. Trust me, there was no perfect moderator on the list. This is America where everyone has their opinions and leanings.

So now that I’ve put the negatives out there, let’s get to the positives. How about embracing the fact that the 3 largest, mainstream theater exhibitors are taking a chance on this film and this topic? Few documentaries ever hit 440 theaters, even for one night.

The success of the event and the conversation I hope it starts are now up to you.

Which is especially surprising since no one has seen the film. I mean, not even my mother. I’ve developed fairly thick skin but it’s always nice to hear something positive. Especially when it’s unsolicited. So it was great to get the following email today from someone named Brandon:

Now why would I want to pay $15 to go sit in a movie theater to watch a film about people brewing and drinking beer??? Why? Because I LOVE BEER!!!! Site looks excellent, can’t wait to see this next Thursday!!
