I’ve received hundreds of emails and tweets since the film came out asking for a list of the beer brands owned by the 2 big brewers. I’ve been meaning to pull one together and when I received today’s issue of Modern Brewery Age, I decided to go with their partial list (for now). The list includes the top brands sold by Anheuser-Busch InBev and MillerCoors (based on sales for the 4 week period ending 11/1/09 from IRI Data Total US Food, Drug & Convenience).
So here is the list. Debate on why it matters will certainly follow.

Some of my favorite brewers: New Glarus Brewing owned by New Glarus Brewing, Bell’s Brewery owned by Bell’s Brewery, New Holland Brewing owned by… you guessed it: New Holland Brewing.
Support your local craft brewers not multi-national corporations!
Amen! And this is only a partial list!
Coors Light outsells Miller Lite?
Interesting
It matters because most people will go through their lives drinking beer from 2 companies and never know what else is out there. Some of this stuff is okay, but most of this “beer” is godawful
It matters!
Great job, do we get more?
This provides a handy list of beer to avoid. Most helpful for the tourist! Here’s what I’ve had since March http://www.flickr.com/photos/goosegog/sets/72157614347470652/
thanks for making this so straight forward and simple for us! (i was getting exhausted researching breweries/distributors every time i went to the liquor store!!!)
DOWN WITH AB/INBEV/MILLER/COORS! VIVA CRAFT BEER!
“And this is only a partial list!” Truly a travesty of epic proportions… can you say Beeropoly!
Amy says it all “…VIVA CRAFT BREW!”
The only beer on that entire list i’d remotely consider drinking is Pilsner Urquell. If any of those other beers were offered to me, i’d ask for a Pepsi.
I’ll still drink Leinie’s. They make a bunch of great beers! http://leinie.com/5th_gen_history.html
Seriously, this list is like looking at a list of Chicago Bears Quarterbacks. (long list of bad). All I can say is there are a lot of people out there who love to suck down watery yellow swill that barely has a hint of what beer tastes like. I guess I can’t blame them though- when I want a soda- I typically want a fountain soda that’s loaded with ice because its refreshing. So I guess the same rule applies for the BMC brews. “Drinkability” to them doesn’t mean “Flavorability”. Anyway, for what it’s worth… I enjoy Three Floyds, New Glaurus, Two Brothers, Goose Island and Dogfish Head.
I have been looking for the list since I saw Beerwars. Never found one. Thanks for posting it.
In fact, I’m going to post it to my blog for all the fellow beer drinkers to see.
Keep up good fight.
Thanks Anat.
When in Canada you can always try our top two: Moosehead and BIg Rock Brewery……
Aren’t Redhook and Widmer still part-owned by AB?
Anat, intrigued, I spent my evening putting together this list, which, while bigger, is still probably not exhaustive.

Good information and thanks for listing it. Some on the list were good beers prior to the big boys buying them. As we all know success in this industry is all about marketing and not quality.
Stick 66:
You are correct. This list is just the top selling. I will put together a comprehensive list with partial owneership as well. For example, Grupo Modelo, parent of Corona is 50% owned by A-B I.
Interesting list, and well researched. And the comments are just as interesting.
I would disagree with the more militant posters here that anything on the list is hereby declared yellow water “swill”. Actually, there are plenty beers on the list that are not only worth drinking but happen to be fine beers. The fact that they are owned or distributed by a multinational company does not automatically dictate a lack of quality. That’s just dumb.
I have always been a big fan of the craft brewery movement and I support the “craft” brewers that _deserve_ my support (if they are delivering _quality_). But let’s be real…there is plenty of crap beer coming from the craft side of the industry as well (often overpriced to boot).
Don’t misunderstand me…I want the “little guy” to do well and thrive, but by the same token I don’t buy into the industry hype that smaller is _always_ better because it’s simply not true and thankfully, many consumers are seeing through the smoke and mirrors (and inflated pricing) as well.
why does the list matter? it doesnt. people with refined palettes already know where to buy their local brews.
Dear Whyitdoesntmatter: Just because you know it all doesn’t mean that there aren’t others who are asking for this information. What people do with it is their business.
For whatever it’s worth..
from the Better World Shopping Guide:
Corporate hero: New Belgium

- Employee owned buisness
- $1.6 million to local community
Corporate villain: Miller (SABMiller)
- EC overall responsibility rating of POOR
- CC Climate change score of 49/100
- 30% owened by Altria (#2 worst company)

Kicking off 2010’s mixed martial arts is the amazing UFC 108. It’s bound going to be a great event with the main match being Evans vs Silva going head to head. You can watch ufc 108 live for FREE in full HD without paying that grotty $55.95 PPV cost.
Boddingtons is killer, I am about to pour myself a pint. . . Kinda bummed they are owned by AB. . . Ah well!
Too much is being made out of some “movement” or whatever. Peoples’ tastes are changing back to dark yellow and brown ales instead of light, watery lagers. Ales were the thing back when dinosaurs walked the Earth and I was a pup. The whole lager thing was fairly recent.
Sorry. I’m digging the IPA from Stone these days. But then, I guess that’s pretty typical. But I like it, so, you know…
Henry Weinhard’s USED to be one of our local breweries, but is the only Oregon name I see on here thank goodness, LONG LIVE PORTLAND BEERS!
I will be avoiding any of the brands on this list from now on. Though like a previous commenter I am fond of Boddington’s.
Just watched the film last night on Comcast. It was entertaining and a real education. Major props to Sam Calagione, Greg Koch and others like them who do it for the love of the craft and passion for the centuries old tradition of brewing. May their tribe increase!
Just watched your movie on Netflix Watch Instantly. Excellent movie, I especially liked to material on the distribution chain and their strong commitment to lobbying (keeping them that way), creating steep barriers to entry for smaller brands and store shelf space. I also liked the “non scientific” taste tests – it showed how thin the loyalty was to the actual beer, vs the brands.
Really enjoyed the movie (off Netflix last night). The craft industry is gaining speed here in New Orleans. We recently got Stone Brewery to move in. Nola Brewery has started up with some good stuff, especially the cask conditioned batches. I wish I didn’t have to go so far to drink my favorite, Smuttynose IPA, though. New Hampshire is a long way off.
